About CPS Mumbai

Established in 1912 by Surgeon General Sir H. W. Stevenson, the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS) Mumbai is an autonomous body dedicated to postgraduate medical education. CPS offers 10 fellowship programs, 39 diploma courses, and 2 certificate courses, empowering meritorious doctors to serve society with advanced qualifications.

MCI Recognized Courses

The following CPS courses and fellowships are recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI), allowing graduates to practice across India. Recognition is retrospective for prior certificate holders.

These courses were derecognized in 2009 (Gazette Notification). DGO, DCH, and DPB were re-recognized in October 2025 (Gazette Notification), and the remaining courses were recognized in January 2026 (Gazette Notification).

Aims and Objectives

  • Promote specialty-based medical practice and facilitate postgraduate medical training, research, and advancements.
  • Collaborate with government, semi-government, tertiary care hospitals, private medical colleges, and private hospitals for specialty training.
  • Strengthen healthcare systems in rural and peripheral areas by providing specialists where MD/MS/DM/MCh are unavailable.

CPS is an examining body modeled after the Royal College of Medicine, similar to the England. It is governed by a 28-member elected council representing various specialties, ensuring robust democratic traditions.

Recognition

  • CPS Fellowships and Diplomas are notified by the Government of Maharashtra under the Maharashtra Medical Council Act, 1965.
  • Recognized by the Government in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
  • Registered with medical councils in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Odisha since its inception.
  • Recognized by the Government of Malaysia at par with other university qualifications.

Admission to CPS Courses in Maharashtra

For admission to CPS courses in Government District Hospitals in Maharashtra, contact the DHS Office, Mumbai. After completing the admission procedure, candidates must enroll with CPS by submitting the application form and paying:

  • Application fee: Rs. 15,000/-
  • Enrollment fees: Rs. 50,200/- (for Diploma Courses)
  • Non-refundable Electronic Paperless Device (EPD) cost: Rs. 52,400/- (basic version) or higher, for study material, attendance tracking, and academic monitoring.

CPS Recognition and Examination

MCI recognizes CPS Fellowships (3 years) and Diploma courses (2 years) conducted in government and private hospitals with standardized academic and clinical activities. The exit examinations for Diploma and FCPS courses are conducted at the host institute with internal and external examiners. Passing the theory exam is not mandatory to appear for the practical exam. Final evaluations are overseen by CPS Mumbai.

Eligibility Criteria

A candidate must meet the following criteria to join a CPS postgraduate course:

  • Hold an MBBS degree or equivalent qualification recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
  • Possess permanent registration with the Maharashtra Medical Council or a state medical council where CPS courses are recognized.
  • Have completed a one-year compulsory internship by 31st March 2025.
  • Have appeared for NEET-PG 2025, with NEET eligibility preferred for initial counseling phases.
  • Foreign medical graduates must have cleared the NBE qualifying exam.
  • For Maharashtra government-aided institutes, candidates must have completed MBBS from a Maharashtra institution.

Additional Criteria for Gujarat:

  • Candidates must have Gujarat domicile.
  • Preference is given to candidates who completed SSC, HSC, and MBBS in Gujarat.
  • 15% reservation for candidates with SSC/HSC from Gujarat and MBBS from outside India.

Additional Criteria for Dadra and Nagar Haveli:

  • Reservation criteria, including for economically weaker sections (PwD), apply as per state/UT rules.

Admission Process

Admissions are based solely on NEET-PG 2025 scores. The process includes:

  • Register on www.cpsmumbai.org with a valid mobile number and email ID.
  • Fill out the online application form, upload documents, and pay a non-refundable fee of Rs. 15,000/- via debit/credit card or net banking.
  • Receive a 10-digit application number for further processes.
  • Apply separately for each state if eligible for multiple states.
  • False or fraudulent applications will lead to disqualification and legal action.

Note: The last date for online form submission in 2025 is August 31 (tentative, check official website for updates).

Selection Process

  • Seats in Maharashtra government-aided institutions are reserved for candidates with MBBS from Maharashtra institutes.
  • Selected candidates are displayed on the CPS website.
  • Selection is strictly based on NEET-PG score.
  • Fees: Rs. 50,200/- (Diploma), Rs. 60,200/- (FCPS), plus Rs. 75,000/- for Electronic Paperless Device (EPD), payable by DD to Paptronics Pvt Ltd. (Pune).
  • Candidates download allotment letters after payment and report to institutes with original documents and fees.
  • Institutes verify documents and issue appointment letters, reporting joining status to CPS.
  • Candidates receive a Post Holding Certificate upon joining.
  • Complete enrollment at CPS office with appointment letter and certificate after July 31, 2025.
  • Retention forms allow candidates to retain allotted seats; otherwise, upgradation is mandatory.
  • Non-joined candidates are ineligible for subsequent rounds.
  • Two rounds of counseling, followed by personal counseling for vacant seats.
