The College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS), or CPS Mumbai, established in 1913, is an autonomous body imparting postgraduate medical education. It offers 10 fellowship, 39 diploma, and 2 certificate courses.

CPS courses were derecognized in 2009 (Gazette notification: link). Courses numbered 1, 2, and 3 were granted recognition in October 2017 (Gazette notification: link), and courses numbered 4 to 10 were recognized in January 2018 (Gazette notification: link).

After completing a CPS Diploma course, candidates can work anywhere in India. However, CPS qualifications cannot be used for teaching purposes.

Over 125 accredited medical institutions, including Government Medical Colleges, Corporation Medical Institutions, medical colleges under Deemed Universities recognized by UGC, and private medical colleges, are affiliated with CPS for postgraduate training in Maharashtra. Additionally, more than 20 institutions in Gujarat, and around 30 hospitals in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Daman-Diu are affiliated with CPS for postgraduate training programs.

  2. Go to CPS-PG-Application -> Brochure and read it thoroughly.
  3. Go to CPS-PG-Application -> Application form.
  4. Select the state where you wish to seek admission.
  5. Read all instructions carefully. If you agree, click “I agree,” then “Continue.”
  6. Fill in personal and academic details.
  7. Upload scanned documents as required and reconfirm before submission. Changes to data/records are not allowed after payment of application fees.
  8. Make payment of application fees via Net Banking or Demand Draft.
  9. Submit the application online at www.cpsmumbai.org from July 1, 2025, to July 20, 2025.

FCPS is recognized across India under the IMC 1956 Act, equivalent to MS/MD. As a 3-year course with a thesis component, candidates can directly appear for the DNB final exam or NEET-SS entrance for super-specialty DM/MCh/DNB SS courses, per MCI e-gazette recognition.

The Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Diploma in Pathology & Bacteriology of CPS Mumbai are recognized by MCI. After passing these MCI-recognized PG diplomas with the required percentage, candidates are eligible to appear for the DNB PDCET examination for admission.

No, only three diploma courses (DCH, DGO, DPB) and six fellowship courses (FCPS in Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Midwifery & Gynecology, Pathology) are recognized by MCI/NMC. Other courses are recognized in five states: Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. Recently, Madhya Pradesh has recognized some courses. As of January 2025, nine CPS courses are recognized in Uttar Pradesh: DGO, DCH, DPB, and FCPS in Medicine, Surgery, Dermatology, Pathology, Gynecology, and Ophthalmology. If the UP health department approves additional courses in the future, the status may change.

Students receive a minimum stipend of Rs. 15,000/- per month in the first year and Rs. 20,000/- per month in the second and third years, with bachelor accommodation provided within or near the hospital premises for emergency access. Students pay Rs. 5,000/- per month for accommodation.

All Diploma/FCPS students must attend two lecture series (in-person or online) scheduled by CPS, with a minimum of 80% attendance required. Additional lectures to meet the attendance quota cost Rs. 150/- per lecture. The lecture series must be completed before the examination.

  1. Selection is based strictly on PG NEET 2024 scores.
  2. Candidates pay a non-refundable amount of Rs. 50,200/- (Diploma) or Rs. 60,200/- (FCPS), adjusted against enrollment fees, and Rs. 75,000/- for the Electronic Paperless Device (EPD) containing study material and monitoring academic activity.
  3. Download the allotment letter after payment.
  4. Report to the selected institution with the allotment letter, payment receipt, original documents, and institutional fees (via Demand Draft).
  5. The institution issues a “Post Holding Certificate” with the joining date.
  6. Visit the CPS office in person with the “Appointment Letter” and “Post Holding Certificate” to complete enrollment.

  1. After obtaining the Post Holding Certificate and Appointment Order, fill the online enrollment form available through your CPS login and upload required documents.
  2. Temporarily retrieve original documents from the institution for CPS verification.
  3. Visit the CPS office in person with:
    • Original Post Holding Certificate and Appointment Order.
    • Original and two self-attested photocopies of: MBBS passing certificate, internship completion certificate, permanent registration certificate, screening test result for foreign graduates (if applicable), identity proof (e.g., State Medical Council ID, Passport, Aadhaar, Election ID), caste certificate, validity certificate, and non-creamy layer certificate (if applicable).
    • Receipt or Demand Draft of enrollment fees.
  4. Return verified original documents to the institution.
  5. Degrees/diplomas are conferred in the enrolled name after passing theory and practical examinations simultaneously.

Candidates who have passed a CPS Diploma examination can enroll for FCPS in the respective subject based on their NEET score from the same academic year. The four posts completed during the Diploma course are considered for the Fellowship. Separate FCPS enrollment fees apply.

  • After completing two stipendiary resident posts (six months each) in a CPS-recognized institution, candidates can appear for DMRE-I/DPM-I theory and practical examinations.
  • After completing four stipendiary resident posts (six months each) and passing DMRE-I/DPM-I, candidates can appear for DMRE-II/DPM-II theory and practical examinations.
  • Candidates are declared successful in DMRE/DPM only after passing Part-II theory and practical examinations simultaneously.

Theory & Practical Examination Fees:
  • DOMS, DGO, DCH, DDV, DA, DORL, DORTHO, TDD, DFP, DTM, DTMH: Rs. 15,200/-
  • DPH, DPB: Rs. 20,200/-
  • DPM & DMRE (Part I & Part II each): Rs. 15,200/-
  • All FCPS except FCPS (Pathology): Rs. 20,200/-
  • FCPS (Pathology): Rs. 22,200/-
  • MCPS: Rs. 10,200/-

The curriculum/syllabus for CPS courses (e.g., DGO, DCH, DPB, Diploma, or Fellowship) is identical to that of other universities in India. Examiners from private/government medical colleges in Mumbai maintain consistent exam standards.

DHS (District Health Services) refers to certain CPS Diploma seats in Civil Hospitals in Maharashtra, available only to eligible candidates. These seats have lower academic fees but are bonded, requiring a minimum 3-year service bond.

  • MCI-recognized CPS seats are bond-free.
  • Maharashtra: DHS seats are bonded; normal CPS seats are not.
  • Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha: All CPS seats are bonded (3 years).
  • Gujarat: CPS seats are currently not bonded.

The primary difference is the fee structure:
  • For Diploma courses, Institutional Quota fees are double the Merit Quota fees.
  • For FCPS courses, Institutional Quota fees are triple the Merit Quota fees.
  • Counselling, joining, enrollment procedures, and stipend are identical.
  • Institutional Quota seats have lower cut-offs due to higher fees.
